Nic-Lucas-Biography

Nic was born in Sydney in 1970, and his family moved frequently.  He grew up in three different states of Australia, in both outback towns and coastal cities – and he attended 9 schools in 11 years of schooling.

A high school drop out – and rock star in the making – he went back to complete his high school certificate as an adult, and then continued to University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Masters degree in Health Science.

He continued to study while he established his first health care practice and he completed a Master of Pain Medicine and Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He is currently undertaking research for his PhD through the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney.

Nic has studied at 5 Australian Universities, has lectured at 3, and is currently based at the University of Sydney.

In 1997, Nic started a scientific publication, and with his good friend Rob Moran – and a host of writers and reviewers – developed this into an international publication that now has subscribers in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, the UK and the USA. In 2005, they received an approach from Elsevier, the worlds largest medical publisher, who offered to take on the publication of the journal. Nic and Rob continue to work with Elsevier as editors of the journal, which is now known as the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.

In his role as a health professional, Nic consults people who primarily present with physical pain. Over the last 10 years he has developed effective strategies for identifying those factors in his patients lives that are the major contributors to their pain, and then designs strategies that modify these factors. Nic has helped thousands of people to actively overcome persistent pain problems, and reduce their reliance on continuous, passive treatment.

Nic has lectured in pain neurobiology and musculoskeletal medicine and is also involved in providing continuing professional education for health professionals.

After being immersed in the fascinating study of pain for over 10 years, Nic has emerged with a broader health education focus – where health education targets not only illness prevention and health recovery, but also promotes skills that support the actualization of long-term goals, the development of a positive self-concept, and the ability to enjoy life.

Nic takes technical concepts from public health, neuroscience, pain medicine, behavioral medicine, critical reasoning and logic, and applies them to everyday life, business and fun. He is fascinated by the fields of behavioral economics and behavior change, and uses knowledge from these fields to understand human problems and human ambition and the strategies for positive change.Nic Lucas Speaker
